The Palace Hotel lights up for Christmas

A Christmas Lighting Ceremony held by The Palace Hotel Kota Kinabalu was a fun event where their team members, friends and business partners came together to enjoy an evening of togetherness and good food.  The  event was held at the Tangerine where the attendees witnessed the lighting of a centre piece where the tools of the trade were exhibited.

During the event, the General Manager  Chloe Loo, addressed the audience where she conveyed her appreciation for their constant support for taking time out to celebrate  with them their first Christmas Lighting Ceremony.
The Christmas tree

She shared that the tree was not traditional as they wanted to build a bigger and different tree that would also mirror their Green Hotel values, the 4R- recycle, reuse, reduce and recover.

With the help of her Maintenance and Housekeeping teams, they built the core structure with recycled flooring and plywood, then gathered recycled items from all departments to showcase on the tree.

She said her teams' effort turned an obstacle into an opportunity and "it truly proves that positive change can be achieved when unison is formed based on clear vision."

"This time of the year is a great time to gather, unwind, reflect and to give thanks with a grateful heart," she said adding that their  Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project this  year was to collect gifts for children of the Bundu Tuhan Don Bosco Children's Home in Ranau, through their Angel Tree.

"Pick a tag with the child’s name and age from the tree, prepare a present for the child. Once ready, attach the tag onto the gift and place it under this Christmas tree by 24th December," she shared.

" You can write down your contact details on the tag for the child to thank you later or remain an anonymous Santa if you’d like. We will then visit the Home with all your presents and celebrate Christmas with them with food and fun activities."

" It’s a meaningful activity that will warm the children’s hearts this festive season so I encourage all of you to pick a name tag today! Apart from that, we also have Christmas cupcakes selling for RM8 each, and 70% of the profit will go straight to organising the a Christmas party with the children."
Chloe (right) with her guests and in-house Santa

" As for Christmas Eve, we will have our extensive Christmas Eve Dinner Buffet, which will be bigger than tonight’s spread. There will be carolers from SDA church and a lucky draw with prize like a year free of gym membership and etc. Our usual Christmas popular items are lamb and turkey with cranberry and orange sauce, seafood paella rice, American beef pie, BBQ corner and croissant butter pudding with vanilla sauce."

"This buffet dinner is RM119 per adult and RM60 per child. On New Year’s Eve, we have something fun planned. New Year’s Eve Dinner Buffet with complimentary glass of wine/ beer/ mock tail, lucky draw, live band performance, pool party and 2020 countdown lighting celebration led by myself and our team. Then followed by drinks promotion at our poolside. This buffet dinner is RM150 per adult and RM75 per child. We have a festive counter here for you to ask questions and make reservations. We hope you can support one of these events, we promise there will be full of good food and music."

"This year, we are extremely blessed to have met many new friends in and out of the industry and have gotten a lot of guidance in things we have achieved. Currently, we are working on rebranding ourselves to present a new and better image to the public."
Sumptuous food

She also shared that they were working hard on renovating their rooms, kitchen, conference rooms and garden, that would be open to all in-house guests.

The Palace Hotel Kota Kinabalu is a 4-star hotel sited on a hill at the Karamunsing area. Its location is convenient for both business travellers and leisure guests. Resort, a boon to villagers

The usual sights for villagers

The Mari Mari Resort is sited by a long stretch of beach on Sepanggar Island; an island located off Kota Kinabalu. The island can be seen from the city centre and from Likas Bay.

There is a small village there, where some 300 people reside. The people there are mostly descended from seafarers and traditionally they are fishermen.
One of the houses

They have settled on the island many years ago, building their homes on a nice shore with shady trees along it. There is a school there now and the community thrives on what they can from the sea and shore as well as mangroves.

However, the younger generations are yearning for more and better source of income, as the sea is not always friendly and magnanimous.

Therefore the presence of the resort at the island is a godsend to the islanders as they can get employment with the resort in its various departments. The public area, kitchen and housekeeping are areas where the people there can work in as they can go on the job training.

Siti Norijah hj Salleh, one of the housekeeping staff said she is very happy to be employed by the resort as it has allowed them to go forward in self-development. This is the place where she can meet people from all over the world, opening her mind to other people’s cultural norms.
Norijah (left) and Noridah

On the economic level, she said it is also a great change to work in the resort as she can earn a livelihood. According to her, in the past they depended on the sea for their livelihood.

"It was tough as we had to scour the sea for our food," she said, adding that if they want to keep food, they had to reheat the cooked fish and shells or mud creepers everyday. Without a fridge, everything had to be consumed at once or reheated everyday.

The little they can sell would not bring them much relief but they had to make do at that time. They also had to use firewood for their kitchen, which was easy due to the abundance of driftwood.

"However we also want to enjoy modern amenities like our village counterparts all over the State."
With money garnered from their job in the resort, they manage to supplement their household income and buy necessary items. This includes generators for electricity and modern cooking utensils.

There are 25 villagers employed with the resort,  five of them in their 20s.
Lijah massaging a guest's leg

"Some of our youth go to the city to work in any kind of jobs. It is difficult for them as they have to rent a place to stay in the city.  So I believe we are lucky to get jobs in the resort,” she shared.

Her colleague Noridah Majok who is also in her 40s echoed her adding that the establishment of the resort helped them in many ways.

She hoped the resort will keep on prospering and expand to allow more employment for the villagers.
Lijah Sala, 21, is a masseur who has been with the resort for four months.

She is a traditional masseur who learnt the skill from her parents and grandparents. She is very thorough in her massage skills having serviced people who are three to four times her size.
This diminutive girl shared that her husband is jobless and the job was a boon to her, being the sole income earner.

"I am very fortunate to inherit these skills from my parents and grandparents as it can help me to earn an income. I am also grateful for this job," she said.

Many of her relatives including her brother, grandmother and aunt as well as her mother are also working with the resort.
Villager's livestock

On the future, she hoped the resort will prosper for many years to come and expand so that more villagers will have employment at the island, She also hoped to acquire advance skills in massage therapy to ensure a bright future in the industry.

These people who work at the back of the house are the ones who ensure that guests and visitors enjoy good services and good food They should always be acknowledged for their efforts.-pw/MSN

On the Beach under the warmth of a tropical sun

The tranquil beach
Holidaymakers who love island destinations usually want to enjoy what the resort has to offer. They want comfortable accommodations, with good air conditioning so they can cool off after a walk under the sun.
Banana Boat

They want to enjoy swimming in the blue sea and then take a walk on the beach, breathe in the fresh invigorating air from the ocean and then get out from the sun, take a good shower and languish in a comfortable cool room.

Off Kota Kinabalu Sabah’s shoreline, there are many islands that fit these criteria. One of them is Sepanggar Island where Mari Mari Sepanggar Island Resort is. At the island, one can enjoy the breeze, the relaxed atmosphere and sea, sand and sun.
Night Snokerling
They can go to the sea, to watch marine life by snorkeling or diving. Sit on the sand to enjoy the tranquility of the sea before one and the blue sky above. Bask in the sun and get that suntan or walk on the sandy beach well protected from the sun with a floppy hat or sunblock.

Just  15 minutes boat ride away from Kota Kinabalu. The boat ride is part of the experience, as guests can enjoy the smell of the ocean as the contraption sails over the water.

Reaching the island and the Mari Mari Sepanggar Island Resort is truly an experience, as guests will actually feel the lazy ‘holiday’ feeling embrace them.
Sumptuous dinner

This island resort comprises of several rooms and 11 chalets on the hillside. The rooms are simply furnished but quite comfortable. Two of the front rooms have a good ocean view and one can see the city from afar. At night the lights are so beautiful in the horizon.

Sitting on the balcony of the room in the evening is such a relaxed experience especially when the sea breeze blows gently.

As for the chalets, they are sited up the hill, with plank steps meandering from one to the other in a rustic way. Guests who opt to stay in the chalets will have a tremendously enjoyable experience as they can enjoy the sight of the ocean before them, while being serenaded by the forest populace. This is especially true in the evenings and nights.
Sunset walk
However, there are night activities for those who don’t want to turn in too early. There is night snorkeling where guests can hope to sight pretty fish or they can dive for a deeper experience.
Of course they can do this during the day too. And to boot that they can participate in sea walking, kayaking and ride a banana boat. There are many activities there that can be of tremendous interest.

Guests are advised to speak to the person in-charge of the activities. Wesley Yongoi the lodge manager shares that guests can opt to stay the night or as long as they want or come for a day trip. For those who stay overnight, they can arrange their meals with him.  Lunch is usually buffet, but dinner is ala carte, unless there is a big group.

As for the food served, it is usually fusion food, but mostly Malaysian food. The Tom Yam soup is delicious and the fried noodles are sumptuous. There are other absolutely delicious foods on the menu, so staying there for several days will be absolutely alright where food is concerned.

This island is absolutely a must-go, so holiday-makers who wish to visit the place for weekend or two can book through their Sales and Marketing Manager Charles Kok 016 443 6367. –av/MSN

With over 23 outlets in Singapore currently, R&B (巡茶) sets itself apart from the rest of the ‘boba’ crowd with its use of all-natural ingredients and the best Oolong tea leaves.

A must-try drink at R&B (巡茶) is the signature “Brown Sugar Boba Milk” (青蛙撞奶) (RM10.90), named after the appearance of pearls that look like frog eggs, which features soft, chewy textured tapioca pearls. The secret of the Brown Sugar Boba Milk’s superior taste lies in the unique in-house brown sugar recipe that is responsible for giving the pearls a rich and creamy caramel taste and tantalizing aroma. This beautiful combination is then topped with fresh milk that adds a dash of creaminess to the yummy concoction.

A decadent treat for the boba lover, the “Brown Sugar Boba Milk with Cheese Brulee”  (老虎出巡) (RM12.90) offers a mouthwatering mix of fresh milk, with rich layers of caramelized brown sugar, soft brown sugar pearls and topped with a generous dollop of cream cheese. Super indulgent!

In addition to the Brown Sugar line, R&B 巡茶 also features a series of premium signature milk tea. Another popular favourite, the Roasted Oolong Tea gives a mesmerizing smoky aroma, thanks to its tea leaves ingredient that are charcoal-roasted for 5 to 12 hours. This method helps release the smokiness and natural sweetness of the tea leaves. You can either have this drink on its own or enjoy it paired with the Oolong Tea-Cream; which is a smooth tea-infused foam that can be added to R&B 巡茶’s selected tea blends.

R&B 巡茶 is the only milk tea brand that offers the unique tea cream -- something that complements R&B 巡茶’s fragrant tea series wonderfully. Even non-fans of tea will be impressed by the naturally-occurring sweet butter and cream notes in the Oolong Tea-Cream, which can epitomize to be the best introduction you need to the art of Oolong Tea appreciation - delicious, soothing and complex.

For fruit tea lovers, the Mighty Luffy (霸气路飞) (RM12.90 - RM15.90) and the Devil’s Booster (恶魔橙实果) (RM10.90) are two of the highly favoured picks on the menu. R&B 巡茶 fruit teas are served with generous portions of freshly cut fruits that are infused in the tea, making it delicious and refreshing.

With offering high quality tea being its top priority, and having over 800 outlets spread across the five continents globally, R&B 巡茶 will continue to expand its market share further in Malaysia and the rest of Southeast Asia region.
